To be a good citizen, you have to prepare yourself to do good work in society. Well, then how can you prepare yourself?
First, you need knowledge. Today’s society is knowledge-based. Without knowing modern sciences, technologies including ICT and other necessary subjects, you will have difficulty living a good life. The other areas you, as a good citizen, should have knowledge about are:
• our country, its constitution, geography and people
• our state, its executive and legislative powers
• our judicial system
• our government and its structures and functions
• our history, cultures, traditions, literature, moral values and religions
• our socio-economic activities and educational system
Second, you need skills to do things. Knowledge is not enough. You must be able to apply your knowledge to do things practically.
Finally, knowing and doing things will bring about a change in your behaviour towards others. This behavioural change will show your attitudes towards others, that is, it will show how you think and feel about a person or thing.
Let’s take an example. Suppose you, as a student, need to know about ‘group work’ in the classroom. So you ask yourself or your teacher or anybody, “What is group work?” Or you may find about it in a book. In this way, you can know, or you may have the knowledge, about group work: To do group work, the class has to be divided into groups. Each group is to do some tasks given by the teacher or in the textbook. The group members will discuss and share ideas and points, and finally, one member will write the answer. All this is knowledge about group work.
Then you start working in groups. In each group you take turns discussing points, answering questions, etc. In this way, you actually do the task. Your teacher may monitor and help you to do the work.
Lastly, through regular group work, it is expected that there will be noticeable changes in your behaviour. Possible changes are:
• You will develop the attitude of freely mixing and talking with your classmates and teacher.
• Your shyness will gradually disappear.
• You will develop the attitude of helping and cooperating with each other.
• You will learn to behave in a democratic way.
Most importantly, these behavioural changes taking place in you inside the classroom will be carried over outside the classroom, in real-life situations.
অনুবাদঃ সুনাগরিক হতে হলে সমাজে ভালো কাজ করার জন্য তোমার নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করতে হবে। বেশ, তাহলে কীভাবে তুমি নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করতে পারো? প্রথমে, তোমার জ্ঞানের প্রয়োজন। আজকের সমাজ হলো জ্ঞান ভিত্তিক। আধুনিক বিজ্ঞান, আইসিটি সম্বলিত প্রযুক্তি এবং অন্যান্য বিষয় সম্পর্কিত জ্ঞান না থাকলে তুমি একটি আদর্শ জীবন যাপন করতে সমস্যায় পড়বে। একজন সুনাগরিক হিসেবে অন্যান্য যে সকল বিষয়ে তোমার জ্ঞান থাকা উচিত তা হলো: • আমাদের দেশ, এর সংবিধান, ভৌগোলিক অবস্থান এবং জনগণ • আমাদের রাষ্ট্র, এর নির্বাহী বিভাগ ও আইন বিভাগের ক্ষমতাসমূহ • আমাদের বিচার ব্যবস্থা • আমাদের সরকার এবং এর গঠন ও কাজ • আমাদের ইতিহাস, সংস্কৃতি, ঐতিহ্য, সাহিত্য, নৈতিক মূল্যবোধ এবং ধর্ম • আমাদের আর্থ-সামাজিক কার্যাবলি এবং শিক্ষা ব্যবস্থা দ্বিতীয়ত, কাজ করতে তোমার দক্ষতা প্রয়োজন। জ্ঞানই যথেষ্ট নয়। ব্যবহারিক ভাবে কোনো কাজ করতে হলে তোমার জ্ঞান প্রয়োগ করার সামর্থ্য থাকতে হবে। পরিশেষে, কাজ জানা এবং করা অন্যদের প্রতি তোমার আচরণে পরিবর্তন আনবে। এই আচরণগত পরিবর্তন অন্যদের প্রতি তোমার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি কীরূপ তা প্রকাশ করবে, অর্থাৎ তুমি কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু সম্পর্কে কীভাবে চিন্তা ও অনুভব করো তার প্রকাশ ঘটবে। একটি উদাহরণ ধরা যাক। ধরো, একজন ছাত্র হিসেবে তোমার শ্রেণীকক্ষে ‘দলগত কাজ’ সম্পর্কে জানা দরকার। সুতরাং তুমি নিজেকে অথবা তোমার শিক্ষক অথবা অন্য কাউকে জিজ্ঞাসা করো, “দলগত কাজ কী?” অথবা তুমি কোনো বইয়ে এ বিষয়ের সন্ধান পেতে পারো। এভাবে তুমি দলগত কাজ সম্পর্কে জানতে পারো অথবা ধারণা নিতে পারো। দলগত কাজ করার জন্য শ্রেণিকে বিভিন্ন ভাগে ভাগ করতে হবে। প্রতিটি দলকে শিক্ষকের দেওয়া অথবা পাঠ্য বই থেকে কিছু কাজ করতে হবে। দলের সদস্যগণ বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় আলোচনা করবে ও ধারণা বিনিময় করে থাকবে এবং পরিশেষে একজন সদস্য উত্তরগুলো লিখবে। এরপর তুমি দলবদ্ধভাবে কাজ শুরু করো। প্রতিদলে তুমি পালাক্রমে বিষয়টি নিয়ে আলোচনা করো ও প্রশ্নের উত্তর দাও। এভাবে তুমি প্রকৃতপক্ষে কাজটি করতে পারো। তোমার শিক্ষক তোমাকে কাজে তদারকি বা সাহায্য করতে পারে। অবশেষে, নিয়মিত দলগত কাজের মাধ্যমে আশা করা যায় তোমার আচরণে উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিবর্তন হবে। সম্ভাব্য পরিবর্তনগুলো হলো:
অবশেষে, এটা আশা করা যায় যে নিয়মিত দলবদ্ধ কাজ করার মাধ্যমে তোমার আচরণে লক্ষ্যণীয় পরিবর্তন আসবে। যেমন:
• তোমার সহপাঠী ও শিক্ষকদের সাথে স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যে ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার দক্ষতা অর্জন করবে। • তোমার জড়তা ধীরে ধীরে কেটে যাবে। • তোমাদের একে অপরের প্রতি সাহায্য ও সহযোগিতার মনোভাব বিকশিত হবে। • তুমি গণতান্ত্রিক উপায়ে আচরণ করা শিখবে।
সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলো, শ্রেণিকক্ষের অভ্যন্তরে সংঘটিত এই আচরণগত পরিবর্তনগুলো শ্রেণীকক্ষের বাইরে বাস্তব জীবনের প্রেক্ষাপটে ব্যবহৃত হবে।

Answer: In order to be a good citizen, one has to have knowledge of some sectors. These sectors are:
i. Our country, its constitution, geography and people,
ii. Our state, its executive and legislative powers,
iii. Our judicial system
iv. Our government and its structures and functions,
v. Our social-economic activities and educational system.

Answer: Knowledge is not enough because we must possess the ability to implement our knowledge in our practical life. Skills provide us with the ability to do things practically.
c. What do you understand by ‘group work’? Why is group work necessary for students?
Answer: The term ‘group work’ means doing a task in a group of several people together under the supervision of a leader or supervision of a leader or superior. Group work is highly necessary for students because through group work students can develop the skill of speaking English freely. They can overcome their shyness and develop the attitude of helping and cooperating with each other.
d. what are the possible outcomes of group work in the classroom?

e. Describe in 2/3 sentences how you can become a good citizen?
Answer: To be a good citizen, first of all, I have to pursue higher education. I must have sound knowledge in all necessary subjects including science and technology. To implement knowledge in my practical life, I must acquire skills and experiences. Besides, I must cultivate some other necessary qualities such as cooperation, discipline, positive attitude, sincerity and willingness to do hard work
f. What is meant by behavioural change?
Answer: Behavioral change means showing attitudes towards others. It will show how we think and feel about a person or thing.
g. What is the importance of knowledge to be a good citizen?
Answer: The importance of knowledge to be a good citizen is that without knowledge of modern science and technologies including ICT and other necessary subjects, it will be difficult to lead a pleasant life in this modern society because today’s society is fully knowledge-based.
h. How can students learn to behave in a democratic way?
Answer: Students can learn to behave in a democratic way by working in groups. Group work brings noticeable changes in behaviour which leads to democratic attitude and manner.
i. What changes will you notice if you work in a group in classroom-based education?
Answer: We will notice the following changes if we work in a group in classroom-based education
i. We will develop the skill of speaking freely in English with our classmates and teacher.
ii. Our shyness will gradually disappear.
iii. We will develop the attitude of helping and cooperating with each other
